How to Apply

The Wilkes Center accepts applications for this program annually beginning October 30, 2023. The recruitment period for this program lasts until January 31, faculty reference letters are due by February 29, and appointments are announced by April 30, 2024. Target start dates are typically between June 1 - December 30, though this can be discussed with Wilkes Center staff if flexibility is sought.

Fellow Application Materials

Please prepare and submit your materials in PDF format

  1. Cover Letter 1 page limit (must include the names of potential faculty sponsors)
  2. Curriculum vitae, including publications
  3. PhD dissertation abstract, including title
  4. Research Project Proposal/Description
      • Description must be titled and not exceed five pages including figures and appendices/references (minimum 12 pt. font).
      • Proposals must describe the proposed research project and timeline.
      • Proposal must be original, not sourced from a previously submitted proposal to a different funding agency.
      • Proposals must address the broader impact of your research to the community at large.
      • Proposals must be relevant to the mission and goals of the Wilkes Center
  5. Professional References for proposed Fellow (Faculty sponsors cannot provide a reference letter)
    • Provide list of names and contact information for 3 professional references.

Faculty Sponsor Application Materials

Faculty Sponsors must provide the following materials in PDF format to Kyla.Welch@utah.edu no later than February 29, 2024. Postdoctoral applicants are responsible for confirming the submission of these materials by the required deadline.

  1. Letter of intent to Sponsor (2 page limit)
  2. Curriculum vitae, including publications
  3. Mentoring Plan (1 page limit)  
      • Examples of mentoring activities include, but are not limited to: career counseling; training in preparation of grant proposals, publications and presentations; guidance on ways to improve teaching and mentoring skills; guidance on how to effectively collaborate with researchers from diverse backgrounds and disciplinary areas; and training in responsible professional practices.
      • In the event of co-sponsorship between two faculty, one faculty member must be identified as the contact mentor for the fellow.
